FEDERAL NARCOTICS CONTROL BOARD
WASHINGTON.D.C.
November 15, 1926.
The Honourable
Sir:
The Secretary of State.
Attention: Mr. John K. Caldwell
I have the honor to refer to your letter of February 23, 1926, FE 811.114 N 16/878, replying to office letter of February 15, 1926, and relating to previous correspondence concerning 443 cans of smoking opium which were smuggled into New York from Hongkong on the Prince Line Steamship Eastern Prince on or about November 24, 1925.
There are attached a copy of a letter from the Assistant Collector of Customs, dated November 12, 1926, and a copy of a letter from the Consul-General of Portugal stationed in New York, dated November 10, 1926, from which it is possible to infer that the opium seized on board the Steamship Eastern Prince did not originate in Macao. The sample opium tin forwarded with the letter of the Consul General of Portugal is being transmitted to you under separate cover. The photographs mentioned, being photographs of the tin so transmitted, are not enclosed.
It is hoped that this information may be of value in connection with any further investigation you may desire to make relative to the source of this unlawful shipment.
Respectfully,
(Sgd.) L. G. NUTT
Secretary, Federal Narcotics
Control Board,
Enclosure No.505
